Starlink’s newest routers look like a meaningful step forward. Router 3 adds WiFi 6, tri band WiFi, improved mesh performance, and multiple Ethernet ports. The newer Router Mini reduces the size of the system further, while the Starlink Mini places WiFi directly inside the satellite terminal.
On paper, it can sound like Starlink has finally solved most of the problems associated with travel internet. In reality, it has mainly improved the equipment sitting between the satellite connection and your devices.
A newer Starlink router can create better WiFi inside an RV. It cannot move a tree, clear the sky above a covered campsite, or completely prevent weather related connection problems.
Starlink’s own support information states that trees, rooflines, poles, and other obstructions can cause service interruptions. The company also acknowledges that moderate to heavy rain, snow, and hail may cause temporary drops or slower service. Starlink has improved its hardware, but it has not changed the basic physics behind satellite internet.
That does not make Starlink a bad product. In open areas far outside cellular coverage, it can be one of the best options available. The skepticism comes from treating each new Starlink router as if it fixes every weakness of the service. It does not.
A router manages a connection after it reaches you. It cannot completely fix the source of that connection.
Cellular routers have their own limitations, primarily the need for compatible cellular coverage. However, they do not require a clear view of the sky. They can stay installed inside an RV, truck, camper, office, or remote workspace. They can connect when powered and avoid the process of placing a satellite terminal outside whenever you stop.
For many travelers, that convenience matters more than reaching the highest possible speed in one ideal location.
This is where the Starlink router vs cellular router conversation needs to become more specific. Starlink should not be compared only with a phone hotspot. These improvements can make the local network faster and easier to manage, especially when several devices are connected. They do not remove the need for terminal placement, power, and open sky.
That distinction matters. If the satellite terminal loses its connection, a newer WiFi router does not keep the internet online. The WiFi network inside the RV may still exist, but there is no active internet connection for it to distribute.

The difference between Starlink and a cellular router becomes more obvious when you move frequently.
If you stay in one location for several weeks, setting up a Starlink terminal may not feel like much of an inconvenience. You find a location with open sky, provide power, organize the cable, and leave it there.
If you change locations every day, the process may become more noticeable.
You may need to unpack the terminal, place it outside, check for obstructions, run the cable, and move the equipment if the original location does not work. When it is time to leave, everything needs to be packed again.

Compared with Starlink, the main advantage is convenience within cellular coverage. It does not need a satellite terminal or open sky. It also gives the user more network controls than a normal phone hotspot.
Starlink still has the advantage when the trip moves completely outside usable cellular coverage. The BR1 Mini 5G cannot connect to a tower that is not there.
This makes the BR1 Mini 5G a practical primary connection for travelers who spend most of their time along highways, near towns, at established campgrounds, or in other areas served by cellular networks. Starlink may still be useful as a secondary option for more remote stops.

The B One 5G can also prioritize certain types of traffic. Work calls or business systems can be given priority over less important activity. Separate WiFi networks can be created for different users or devices. Ethernet equipment can connect directly to the router without depending entirely on WiFi.
For someone who only wants to connect one phone and one laptop, that may be more router than necessary. For someone running a complete RV network, office, or mobile operation, those features can matter.

Power and Physical Space
Power use matters when internet equipment runs from batteries, solar panels, or a limited RV electrical system.
The Starlink Mini uses an average of 25 to 40 watts according to Starlink. Other Starlink systems may require different amounts of power. Actual consumption can vary based on the hardware and operating conditions.
A cellular router does not need to power a separate satellite terminal. The exact power requirements depend on the device, but the physical setup is generally more contained.
Starlink also needs an operating location with enough open sky. That may mean placing the terminal on the ground, a table, the roof, or farther away from the campsite. The cable then has to reach the rest of the system.
An OTR Mobile router can stay inside and connect to external antennas when appropriate. This allows for a cleaner and more permanent installation.

Starlink’s biggest strength is its ability to reach beyond cellular infrastructure. That is a real advantage, and it should not be ignored simply because the setup has limitations.
When an OTR Mobile Router Is the Better Choice

Both options avoid the need to place a satellite terminal outside at every stop. They can also connect to external cellular antennas, which may improve the router’s use of an existing signal.
An OTR Mobile router will not replace Starlink in every remote area. It may, however, be easier to live with during the majority of a typical trip.
What most experts recommend
After comparing the strengths and limitations of both options, we believe an OTR Mobile router is the better primary internet system for most RVers, truck drivers, remote workers, and travelers who spend the majority of their time within cellular coverage.
It stays installed, works without a clear view of the sky, and can connect while the vehicle moves through covered areas. It also supports more devices and provides greater network control than a standard hotspot.
The BR1 Mini 5G gives travelers a strong cellular router without making the setup unnecessarily complicated. The B One 5G goes further by managing larger networks and multiple internet sources, including Starlink.
That does not mean we think Starlink is useless. It means we think its best role is often more specific than the advertising suggests.
Starlink can be an excellent option when you travel beyond cellular coverage. It can also work well as a secondary connection alongside OTR Mobile. What it should not be treated as is a perfect answer for every campsite, every route, and every weather condition.
