While I sadly couldn’t convince the rest of the team to go to Dollywood after… we did manage to connect with and solve many of the portable internet issues faced by the Grand Design RV Community over the weekend! We will be covering all the highlights of the event for those of you who couldn’t attend!
Thursday, May 1st:
George and I arrived at roughly 8 a.m. and began working on our magnum opus… well, George set up the booth while I helped myself to the complimentary breakfast while chatting with some of the other attendees. Being our first show, we had a lot of eureka moments within just 30 minutes of arrival, but that’s why it’s the first show! It took us roughly 20 minutes to go from an empty spot to two dudes streaming Top Gun Maverick in the middle of the affectionately named “Vendor Village” (see setup image below).
Within minutes, we had amassed a crowd of the other vendors, standing at our booth watching and asking to join our network. Shortly after came the rush, and we were there ready to sell like two sharks in the water! Yet, interaction after interaction, we were met with questions we were surprised to be hearing. Getting RV internet has always been a struggle for many, and when many companies out there claim to be the best RV internet service it can be hard to really sift through a lot of the marketing jargon. It was during that though that we had a realization: we had it all backwards. We were too focused on making our customers fit our product, and not the other way around. Instead of proclaiming we are the best RV wifi service (which we are) we need to SHOW IT!
The whole trip really ended up being a learning experience for the team at OTR Mobile that really ignited a new flame for us! We discovered issues and potential issues we were once not familiar with and then began proactively constructing solutions to resolve these new pain points.
At 1 p.m., George gave a seminar at the conference center, where we began to really educate ourselves and the attendees on the real issues and solutions for this beloved and strong community. We also unveiled our new remote management software for our Inseego devices during the seminar: the OTR Mobile Waypoint! Assisting our customers has never been easier. We can now log into your device remotely and perform functions once difficult for the less technologically savvy, such as APN management, port forwarding, and administrator settings changes, allowing us to make life even easier for our customers!
Overall, the day as a whole was a huge success. We connected with many everyday RVers, learned more about what they face, and demonstrated how we are able to make this lifestyle ever so easier!
Friday, May 2nd:
We hit the ground running on day two. We began getting people connected left and right, attended some of the events that were planned like the cooking presentation and bourbon tasting by true-blood RVers, and really started to feel more in tune than ever with the community!
We also launched our $1 show rentals to let people try out the service from the comfort of their rig for the duration of the rally to really show people the OTR Mobile difference! Everyone we talked to, we took notes, and we began theory crafting. Customer experience and community are the two biggest pillars for OTR Mobile, and this event opened the floodgates for ideas and ways to better connect this often-overlooked demographic!
It was truly a magical thing to behold, and we got to hear the stories of many hardships they faced due to things like lackluster campground Wi-Fi or phone hotspot overage fee nightmares. Overall, we walked away Friday with a sense of pride and accomplishment, having connected many families with a truly reliable service!
Saturday, May 3rd:
Saturday was much of the same as Friday. We arrived ready to listen and help get people away from unsecure, throttled, and price-gouged plans. Many of the people we spoke to came to visit us one last time, either to get connected, thank us for what we were doing, or ask a few more questions, to which we were ecstatic!
Conclusion (tl;dr):
While we arrived initially with the goal to sell, we shortly realized that this community, like everything else, is dynamic and always evolving, and so are their needs. We learned more about the day-to-day routine and challenges facing many RVers and walked away with amazing ideas we plan to execute on to better service this welcoming community!
We also introduced the OTR Mobile Waypoint, the new remote management system for our Inseego devices, which will better allow us to empower our customers to live a lifestyle of truly unlimited possibilities. Because you didn’t buy an RV to be limited!
